PP crashing when adding audio

When I add embedded audio to my PP presenation, PP freezes up, even after repeated reboots. This happens on the first slide or further into the slide. What could be the problem

What type of audio file (the file extension)? I ask because only WAVs can
be embedded. Have you tried doing a Detect and Repair? What version of
PowerPoint are you running?

As far as I know, no particular sound file. I'm using the Record Narration feature. I'm running PP 2003. Technically, maybe I'm not "embedding" sound.

I don't use PowerPoint to record narrative, so hopefully someone else will
pop in with some helpful ideas. But, are you sure that your microphone is
connected and working?
