I'm trying to figure out how to have the slideshow automatically start when
my customer receives it in e-mail and clicks on it.

You will need to save as a powerpoint show .pps file

save as then in the save as type box scroll down till you find "Powerpoint
show *.pps"

If you have 2007 version you will first need to choose save as > other formats
