PP Viewer 2003 & Windows 98 SE

I downloaded and installed the free Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 but it will
not open. I get an error message that says it will only work with Windows 98
Second Edition (which I have as my operating system) and several other later
versions. Suggestions?

You're getting the message:
The Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 could not start. This version of the PowerPoint Viewer is only
supported on Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP and
Windows Server 2003.

Well...
Don't look at me, as I have Windows 98 SE on another computer of mine and I get the same thing.

And for those that ask, I'm 100% positive that it is Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) and NOT Windows 98 (the
original; first edition).

The System Control Panel reports:

Microsoft Windows 98
Second Edition
4.10.2222B

If you ask me, the only way might be to re-install Windows 98 SE.

I hope this helps?

Martin,

The ppt viewer 2003 edition does indeed install on windows 98 SE.

but before it will install you need to patch / service release / this....

That should do the trick.

I had downloaded and installed the patch before I downloaded the viewer. I
did it again after getting your suggestion and it indicated that the patch
was already installed. I re-downloaded the viewer and it still gives me the
same error message.

Thanks. Misery loves company. I tried TAJ's approach (I had used the patch
when I first tried the viewer download) and redoing it did not help.

Martin,

1) When you install the viewer - does it appear to install 100% OK?

2) When you run the installed viewer what is the exact error message ?

3) How are you starting the viewer ?
a) are you double clicking an icon,
b) or are you starting it from
start > programs > wherever it is > microsoft office powerpoint viewer ?

Cheers
TAJ

1. The viewer does appear to install 100%. It shows up in Windows Explorer.
I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. same result.
2. The error message is:
The Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer could not start. This version of the
PowerPoint Viewer is only supported on Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition,
Windows Millenium Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows server 2003
3. I have tried starting the viewer both from the Windows Explorer utility
and by putting a PowerPoint presentation on a CD into my CD ROM drive (and I
have tried several such CDs). Neither works. I just get the error message
above.
4. I do not have an icon for the viewer.
5. the strange thing is that I have a CD with a PowerPoint presentation on
it which apparently also contains the viewer program because it opens up as a
slide show of about 30 pictures without any prompting. I am not sure just
what the preparer did to generate the CD.

I found a file called Ppview32.exe on my hard drive and when I opened it up
I was able to browse for the PowerPoint presentations I had and sucessfully
open them. I still cannot just load the presentation disk into my CD ROM
drive and have it open up by itself, however. It still gives me the error
message about needing Windows 98 Second Edition.

Have you r-clicked the .ppt file and selected Ppview32.exe as the
"Always Open With" selection?

T

Timothy L

Ppview32.exe is the installed older version of the PowerPoint Viewer, called Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 97.

You can use PowerPoint Viewer 97 instead of PowerPoint Viewer 2003, however, you should note that PowerPoint
Viewer 97 doesn't support certain features in newer versions of PowerPoint, such as Microsoft PowerPoint 2002
(a.k.a. Microsoft PowerPoint XP) and Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 (a.k.a. Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003).

How do I do that? Every time I click on it all I get is the error message
saying that the PowerPoint Viewer will not open. When I right click I get a
drop down menu which does not seem to offer an association option.

My question was how to do that. I thought that my replies within the string
were
available to everyone. Is there some other "newsgroup" that I should post a
note to about using ppview32.exe when Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 will not
open, even though the Windows 98 Second Edition operating system is present?

Hi Martin,

That's a standard signature line a lot of folks use. It just means
"Please don't email me directly". :)

I suspect you don't realize you are accessing the newsgroups (NNTP)
using a portal Microsoft designed in order to provide access to the
newsgroups using your web browser. Most of us use a newsreader, such
as Outlook Express, to access the newsgroups. Newsreaders have
commands for "Reply Group" and "Reply" (to Author). The message in the
signature line a request for others to use the "Reply Group" instead
of "Reply". (Those of us who have been overwhelmed in the past with
email replies, rather than posts to the newsgroup, have added this
type of request as part of our standard signature.)

The web based newsreader does not have these commands so I'm sure it
can be a bit confusing if you aren't familiar with newsgroups.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

I have amended my signature to state that same thing, only with fewer words.

Anywho...
That is exactly what I mean.
