Preference icon on toolbar

I don't see a Preference icon on the Entourage toolbar, yet all the
instructions I can find about changing my e-mails from plain text to
HTML start with that. I have Entourage 2004 installed on a MacBook I
bought at the Apple store in October 2006 (they installed Entourage).
Everything under Format is also entirely gray, but I assume that's
because I am in plain text.

In Entourage, there are two different toolbars in a "new message" window.
The first one is at the top of the window and contains the Send, Send Later,
Attach etc. buttons. The other toolbar is the formatting toolbar, and it can
be found just above the text area where you write your actual e-mail
message. If you write messages in plain text, that area should be dimmed;
however, once you click on the button with the red and blue "abab" symbol,
at the left end of the toolbar, these buttons all become active. Note that
you can also make a change in Entourage's preferences
(Entourage>Preferences, Compose) to send HTML messages by default.

I think you're looking in the wrong place. The menu is not in the
"toolbar" - it's in the *menu bar* at the very top of the screen:

But WHERE do I find the Preferences icon? One reply said that I was
looking in the wrong place, that I should look at the top of the
screen. That's where I have been looking, and it has the little blue
apple, then Entourage, File, Edit,View, Message, Format, Tools,
Window, Help, and a scroll-like symbol. I really want to have the e-
mail messages I send in HTML by default, yet apparently I can't do
that without finding Preferences!

Under Entourage in the menu bar select Preferences --> Compose. There are
pop-ups to select Mail Format and News Format. Select HTML.

I highly suggest you set to plain text in the popup for mail. Most lists and
most people do not like HTML mail. Save that for your friends that do. You
can easily change a plain text message to HTML in the menu
bar...Format->HTML. But, to make that easier, check "Show HTML formatting
tool bar in message composition window."

Fonts can be set for plain text and HTML. The settings for plain text only
affect what YOU see and not what the sender receives. The receiver will see
the messages with THEIR preferences. When setting plain text, choose what
you like. This is a great feature, especially if you like larger fonts for
easy viewing. However, the font and size you choose for "HTML messages
(proportional)" do reflect the default font for outgoing HTML mail and is
what the recipient will see.

HTML font size can sometimes be misinterpreted when sent from a Mac to PC.
This has been improved with the latest updates to Office X and 2004, but can
still cause problems. This is why plain text is preferred.

Maybe I'm crazy, but this helps me not at all because I CAN'T FIND
Preferences, so I can't do what you are telling me to do. I've had
another person look at it, and they don't see a Preferences icon
either. Could it be hidden?

I'm also surprised about what you are telling me about plain text,
because all of my friends & many acquaintances send e-mails with
pretty fonts and colors, and I'm just trying to do what they have --
and I'm sure they are not doing it just for me, because I get their e-
mails that have been sent to different groups of people. Their e-
mails look much better than mine.

I don't know how to state it more clearly:

As I mentioned use HTML for friends not lists. Many lists do not accept HTML
mail at all. List members come from all over the world. Many places still
charge by the minute to download and not the unlimited accounts like we are
used to in the US.

I despise getting HTML where the sender makes the font so small I can't read
it. Then there are those that make it so big it's hard to read. That's why I
say use plain text in lists like this when possible. If you use HTML in a
list make it simple. Save the fancy stuff for your friends that like it.
That's the beauty of being able to toggle back and forth between plain text
and HTML.

I don't know how to state it more clearly:

It's possible the OP is expecting to find a Preferences *icon* "under" the
menu bar, so the only way I can think of to possibly put a finer point on it
is to indicate that Preferences is a *menu item*, not an icon.

Look for it in the Entourage *menu*.

Hope that helps,
Jeff

Well, I will tell you how to state it more clearly, since I have
finally figured it out. And before I start I'll tell you that neither
my husband nor I could figure out what you were talking about-- and
both of us have advanced degrees from major universities (mine is from
MIT). You never stated that "under" meant literally UNDER the WORD
Entourage -- both of us have been assuming that by "under Entourage"
you meant "in the program Entourage", not physically under the word
Entourage. It has been a very frustrating day, all so that I can make
my e-mails pink or blue, and in 14 point type.

Once the user has selected the preference, this will put the icon in the
menu bar to toggle HTML on/off and give you the icons to compose your HTML
messages.

I'm glad you got your pink emails. :)

BTW, What else could under Entourage in the menu bar mean? Did you not know
what the menu bar was? In a previous email you mentioned:

<quote>

apple, then Entourage, File, Edit,View, Message, Format, Tools,
Window, Help, and a scroll-like symbol.
</quote>

It's important to me to be able to give clear instructions.

FYI...The scroll-like symbol is the Script menu.

I replied to your message in this thread earlier today and showed you a
