"Preparing to Install" Message - Word 2007 - No Solution ?

K

Hi all, I have a nagging problem that I have googled thoroughly but
cannot find anything that applies specifically to the trouble I'm
having. I'm running Windows Vista and everytime I wish to start Word
2007 (I have Office Enterprise 2007) it brings up a number of
different messages relating to "preparing to install", "configuring"
etc: The messages don't always seem to be the same, some instances
bring up the enterprise install screen while other don't. Word does
eventually load up and run fine but the time taken to load with all
the messages can vary from 1 minute to 10 minute. The computer has a
Windows performance rating/index of 4.7 so something is definitely
dragging its heels somewhere.
Enterprise has been working fine on the computer for a few weeks now
and it all began happening after installing and removing Office XP
recently. It was only after removing Office XP that the trouble
began, while it was installed, the two suites coexisted happily. In
googling I found quite a few references to the windows installer clean
up utility, I have tried this with no success. I have also tried re-
installing Office Enterprise twice now to no avail. I made sure to
delete any relevant references to "office" in the registry prior to
doing this. I have also run the Office Diagnostics which detected and
supposedly repaired 1 issue but this made no difference either. I'm
very frustrated now as I initially thought it would be an easy fix but
it is turning into a rather large dilemma. If anyone has some helpful
information that could lead to a solution it would be MOST
appreciated, I'm really not wanting to re-install Vista and start
again !

Run a full repair of Office 2007 via Control Panel, Programs and
Features (or Uninstall a Program). The problem is that you installed an
earlier Office version after Office 2007. The correct way to do this is
to install the earlier version, in your case XP, first and only then the
newer version (2007).

Patrick, thanks for the suggestion, I have just tried doing the repair
via the control panel and unfortunately am experiencing the same
issues. I also noticed that the messages pop up when loading any
Office program except Outlook. Outlook will load as it should but
when sending or receiving emails the messages pop-up... I'm assuming
this is because it is still effectively loading word (set as the
default email editor) ?

Outlook 2007 doesn't load Word itself.
You might have no other choice than to remove 2007, reboot and reinstall
it.

This is the dilemma Patrick, I have done a remove, reboot and re-
install twice and am still having no luck... I'm thinking there has to
be a registry entry somewhere that is causing the problem... can
anyone recommend a registry cleaner for this purpose ?

There is no other Office version installed, I have removed the
installation of Office XP that was previously on the computer... I
have also used the Windows Install Clean up utility to ensure the
removal was complete. I don't know if this helps but the messages are
different depending on whether you load an office program through
clicking on a file or opening via the shortcut. Attempting to open a
word file brings up the Word 2007 splash screen which then reverts to
the Office 2007 "Configuration Process" message, trying to load Word
from the Word shortcut simply brings up a "Preparing to install"
message and then reverts to the Office 2007 "Configuration Process"
message. This one has beaten me...

Also note the following details... My event log has produced
numerous warnings, one of the more significant is :

Detection of product '{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}',
feature
'ProductFiles', component '{6252B847-BADA-43D4-9252-E39767FA40A1}'
failed. The resource 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip\' does not exist.

I tried to access the HCR\.pip\ key in Regedit and receive the
following message:

"Error Opening Key
...pip can not be opened.
An error is preventing this key from being opened.
Details: Access is denied."

You can always try a restore point prior to installing Office XP.
My other suggestion is to use the manual removal steps to remove Office
2007 completely from your computer, and then reboot and reinstall. See
my RTM issues page for a link to them. Note that it says beta removal
steps there. Just ignore that, the steps work for the final version too.

If anyone has some helpful
information that could lead to a solution it would be MOST
appreciated, I'm really not wanting to re-install Vista and start
again !- Hide quoted text -

Patrick, thanks for the suggestion, I have just tried doing the repair
via the control panel and unfortunately am experiencing the same
issues. I also noticed that the messages pop up when loading any
Office program except Outlook. Outlook will load as it should but
when sending or receiving emails the messages pop-up... I'm assuming
this is because it is still effectively loading word (set as the
default email editor) ?- Hide quoted text -

This is the dilemma Patrick, I have done a remove, reboot and re-
install twice and am still having no luck... I'm thinking there has to
be a registry entry somewhere that is causing the problem... can
anyone recommend a registry cleaner for this purpose ?- Hide quoted text -
- Show quoted text -

There is no other Office version installed, I have removed the
installation of Office XP that was previously on the computer... I
have also used the Windows Install Clean up utility to ensure the
removal was complete. I don't know if this helps but the messages are
different depending on whether you load an office program through
clicking on a file or opening via the shortcut. Attempting to open a
word file brings up the Word 2007 splash screen which then reverts to
the Office 2007 "Configuration Process" message, trying to load Word
from the Word shortcut simply brings up a "Preparing to install"
message and then reverts to the Office 2007 "Configuration Process"
message. This one has beaten me...- Hide quoted text -

Also note the following details... My event log has produced
numerous warnings, one of the more significant is :

Detection of product '{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}',
feature
'ProductFiles', component '{6252B847-BADA-43D4-9252-E39767FA40A1}'
failed. The resource 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pip\' does not exist.

I tried to access the HCR\.pip\ key in Regedit and receive the
following message:

"Error Opening Key
..pip can not be opened.
An error is preventing this key from being opened.
Details: Access is denied."

I'm REALLY hoping I don't have to re-install Vista... this seems to
be happening to quite a lot of people...

Unfortunately I don't have a restore point set before I installed
Office XP, I did try the manual removal steps however the problem
still persists. I deleted all the relevant registry keys outlined in
the steps but couldn't help but notice how many other keys there are
still in the registry related to Office. Would it be safe to delete
any key that has a reference to Office or not ? Is it worth
reinstalling and removing Office XP again to see if any changes are
made ?

very frustrated now as I initially thought it would be an easy fix but
it is turning into a rather large dilemma. If anyone has some helpful
information that could lead to a solution it would be MOST
appreciated, I'm really not wanting to re-install Vista and start
again !- Hide quoted text -

I'm REALLY hoping I don't have to re-install Vista... this seems to
be happening to quite a lot of people...- Hide quoted text -

Unfortunately I don't have a restore point set before I installed
Office XP, I did try the manual removal steps however the problem
still persists. I deleted all the relevant registry keys outlined in
the steps but couldn't help but notice how many other keys there are
still in the registry related to Office. Would it be safe to delete
any key that has a reference to Office or not ? Is it worth
reinstalling and removing Office XP again to see if any changes are
made ?- Hide quoted text -

Well it just keeps getting better... I'm saving money on haircuts I
assure you ! My installation of OXP is now doing the same thing with
O2007 unistalled ! I cannot use either Office Suite without this
issue.

Hi all, I have a nagging problem that I have googled thoroughly but
cannot find anything that applies specifically to the trouble I'm
having. I'm running Windows Vista and everytime I wish to start Word
2007 (I have Office Enterprise 2007) it brings up anumber of
different messages relating to "preparing to install", "configuring"
etc: The messages don't always seem to be the same, some instances
bring up the enterprise install screen while other don't. Word does
eventually load up and run fine but the time taken to load with all
the messages can vary from 1 minute to 10 minute.
I have also tried re-
installing Office Enterprise twice now to no avail.I made sure to
delete any relevant references to "office" in the registry prior to

time and reinstalled OXP. I found OXP does the same thing now (this
is what I was referring to earlier) and there wasn't any advantage in
running with it anyway ! I then uninstalled OXP again (so there was
no Office version installed at all) and ran through all the steps you
outlined and what I have found googling... this includes:
- running a registry cleaner
- manual removal steps
- windows installer clean up utility
- manually deleting any relevant "office" related key in the registry
(yes I'm that desperate !)
- manually deleting any "office" related files on the hdd
- reregister msiexec
and probably a few other things I can't remember...

AND THEN (takes a deep breath and counts to ten) <insert desperate
facial expression here>... I reinstalled O2007 with fingers crossed
and hopes high, only to have them dashed with numerous "Preparing to
install" and "Configuration Process" messages appearing again !
So thats it... I'm working around it ATM (leaving a word, excel etc:
instance running prevents the messages appearing)
There is obviously something located on the HDD somewhere that I'm
missing, or another program is interfering somewhere - does anything
else interact with Office to cause this behaviour ?

A registry cleaner? Not a good idea with 2007...It reacts a bit
unfriendly to it.
Let me see if I can find anything that might help you.

So you removed 2007 and reinstalled XP?
Did you try to remove XP and then reinstall 2007? If you have installed
2007 again while XP was on it, you prob. should remove it via the manual
steps again.

My other suggestion is to use the manual removal steps to remove Office
2007 completely from your computer, and then reboot and reinstall. See
my RTM issues page for a link to them. Note that it says beta removal
steps there. Just ignore that, the steps work for the final version too.

If anyone has some helpful
information that could lead to a solution it would be MOST
appreciated, I'm really not wanting to re-install Vista and start
again !- Hide quoted text -

I have been searching for a solution to this -exact- problem all morning
and last night. It is maddening. I haven't been through all the steps
that you have, but I'm computer-savvy if anything (I do tech support on
the side), and this problem has me -completely- dumbfounded. Office is a
-necessary- part of my work, too. It's driving me absolutely batty.

The godforsaken "Windows Installer" window pops up -every time- an
Office window is launched. Sometimes, it even launches twice, right
overtop itself (obviously resulting in an error). I have tried
repairing the installation, I have run Office Diagnostics, I have let
it run its course and rebooted as instructed, I have reinstalled
completely, using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove any
traces of previous installations in the process... I've tried
everything. I've got a Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of RAM, and a brand
new PC, and man it eats up resources as well. It's quite possibly the
most annoying problem I have ever experienced with my own PC.

I have never installed a previous version of Office on this computer,
nor have I run Office 2007 beta on it. Office 2007 Enterprise is the
-only- version of Office I have ever run on this PC.

Microsoft screwed -something- up -badly- here. If -anyone- has any idea
what to do, please, please, -please- let us know.

Edit:

The information at this link seems to pertain to our situation as well.
Perhaps it is not unique to Office 2007... but it still does not make
any sense:

Sounds like this is a legitimate, and quite substantial, flaw in
Microsoft's software.

Well Steve, I'm sorry to say I actually took comfort in reading your
words !! I thought I was one of very few who was still battling at
this... at least if there's someone else out there then something
might get done. I found a few relevant links to the problem but
everything led to a dead-end. I agree with your statement "quite
possibly the most annoying problem" you've experienced. Never have I
spent so much time trying to work out an issue like this. I would
have been much better off re-installing Vista (as someone else did to
resolve the issue) but considering the amount of time I've spent now
attempting to fix this makes that a very horrible though on principle
alone!! Let's hope this is the start of a movement and we can grow
our hair back and live in peace :) Yes, I am indeed very emotional
about this if you couldn't already tell ;-)

Can you try these steps please (I think Bob Buckland provided them to
you earlier already in a thread in office.setup):
1- Reregister MSIEXEC.
2- Uninstall Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise.
3- Take ownership and delete the HKCR\.pip registry key.
4- Install Office 2007 Enterprise again.

If it is a 64-bit version of the OS, the path will be a little different
- HKCR\WOW6432Node\.pip.

I followed your steps Patrick but when I get to step 3 the registry
key does not exist... it is there prior to uninstalling O2007 but not
after. Nonetheless, I did the following:
- reregister MSIEXEC
- uninstall O2007
- complete manual removal steps
- run Windows Installer Clean-up Utility (just for insurance -
nothing office related was listed though)
- complete hdd and registry search for "office" related data and
deleted accordingly
- disable AVG Internet Security and disable internet
- reinstall O2007
After the reinstall the behaviour was still no different...so I took
ownership of the .pip key and deleted it while O2007 was still
installed. This still made no difference... the key is just re-
created after allowing the configuration process to run through (when
trying to load Word).
I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I have been seeing the following
message when opening Outlook - " 'microsoft vba for outlook add-in'
is not a valid Office add-in.".
