preparing to shut down

If I leave my computer for approx 5 mins the following message appears.
"Preparing to shut down". This in fact stops me from accessing anything,
unless I switch off at the mains and re boot. Any help gratefully acknowledged

You might want to check your Display settings on the control panel (screen
saver tab). There's a button labeled power. It sounds like your computer
is set to go into power saving mode after five minutes of non-use.
