presentation keeps jumping back to first slide

my presentations keep returning back to the first slide without reason. any
suggestions how to cure this please.

The only time that PowerPoint should jump back to the first slide is if
your slide show is in Kiosk Mode (Slide Show menu > Set Up Show > Browsed
at a Kiosk). This should happen after 5 minutes of inactivity (although it
has been quite variable in reality). Could this be it? If not, what are you
doing when it jumps back to the first slide? Does this happen on one
machine or all machines? On one presentation or all presentations? What
version of PowerPoint are you using? Are you using a wireless keyboard
and/or mouse?

I am running microsoft office professional 2002. the problem only occurs on
this computer.
i am running classes for umpires, it happens when the system is idle and i
am discussing points on a slide.

Have you looked in the Slide Show menu under Set Up Show? Is it set to
Browsed at a Kiosk? This is normal behavior for that setting.
Unfortunately, the normal behavior for that setting is very inconsistent.
It is supposed to take you back to the first slide after 5 minutes of
inactivity, but on different machines that 5 minutes seems to vary quite
a lot, including not happening at all on some machines. That
inconsistency would explain your only seeing this behavior on this
machine.

The presentation is not in kiosk mode, but Iagree it is acting like it is.
Ihave tried reloading office but with the same result?

Have you checked to see if voice recognition is on? This can do very strange
things while you're speaking!

Voice recognition is not on. I use the slide for reference and call on my
experience for narration, as questions are varied and may have to go off the
current on screen subject.

What's the status of your screensaver? Screensavers usually don't
interfere with PowerPoint, but it is possible. Try turning off your
screensaver and see what happens.

How about a flaky keyboard? Have you tried changing keyboards or is this
a laptop?

It is a laptop. It would seem i have to live with this. Although it is not at
all professional the way it is.

I have the laptop connected to a NEC projector by a usb cable. I am the only
one in the room. The only remote device is the NEC remote for advancing to
the next slide etc.
