Preserving Aspect Ratio in Slides.

A

Andy I.

Hi,

When I make a slideshow instead of INSERT I use FORMAT | BACKGROUND | FILL
EFFECTS | PICTURE | SELECT PICTURE | INSERT | LOCK ASPECT RATIO | OK | APPLY
in order to fill the slide with the picture without distorting the aspect
ratio.

This gets a little tedious when treating a large number of slides this way.
Can I select these settings then somehow apply them to all the pictures
which I will be inserting?

Thanks Steve. Glad you found my post!
The "batch insert" options could be useful but it seems none would permit
the "automatic" formatting of each slide, if I'm reading them correctly.

Hi Andy

If I understand correctly what you mean by automatic formatting, you can set
up a template just how you want it and then use it for the photoalbum. Make
sure the template contains an autoshape formatted how you want the photos to
be formatted (e.g. line colour/size)

Thanks Lucy.

I haven't been using photoalbum (having been warned off it......). Also how
is an Autoshape set up?
As you can see, I'm pretty new at this.........

Hi Andy

Yeah the photoalbum has some serious limitations but I still use it if I
want to produce something quickly that I'm only going to use once.

Anyway, to set autoshape defaults:
1. Draw an autoshape e.g. a rectangle from your drawing toolbar (generally
at the bottom of your window) Top tip: to create a perfect square/circle hold
shift while drawing
2. Double click autoshape and set fill & line to how you want (both on
colours & lines tab)
3. Tick 'default for new objects' tickbox in bottom left hand corner & ok
out of dialogue box
4. To be on the safe side I usually right click autoshape & select 'set
autoshape defaults' too - proabaly overkill but, hey, my computer sometimes
gets as forgetful as I do.
5. If you want to use a certain font in text boxes (rather than
placeholders), select the autoshape, press f2, add some text, format that
text how you want & repeat step 4 (or do this first!)

So to create the photoalbum template, set up your background, placeholders
(on the master: view->master->slide master) & autoshapes (just on a normal
slide or it will appear on all slides) as desired, save as .pot then when you
create your photoalbum there is a little browse box for 'design template'.

Hope that's clear (I've not had my coffee yet), if not post back :)

Thanks Again Lucy.

All I'm trying to do at the moment is place a picture on the slide to *fill*
it, i.e. corner to corner, while maintaining the aspect ratio of the objects
in the picture. The method I described in my first post works fine, but is
a bit of a chore when dealing with a large number of slides individually.

I have followed your instructions (I think....) and while it speeds up
assembling the slides, the picture does not fill the slide corner to corner.
With a "landscape" format picture it fills the slide side to side leaving a
border top and bottom. It fits the original picture to the slide in that
respect.
I set the Autoshape to fill the slide corner to corner, but it seemed to
apply only to the background. I thought it would apply to the
picture...........

Maybe I'm asking too much.

Hmmm.

If I use 'fit to slide' option all my landscape pics fill the slide (though
the portrait ones don't). Not sure why yours don't :-( Perhaps you need to
re-size them first - I believe you can do batch resizing with various photo
manipulation software (not my area I'm afraid).

Have you tried the imgae importer wizard? http://skp.mvps.org/iiw.htm There
is a free trial. I'm afraid I don't know the product but plenty around here
do and I'm sure Shyam would respond to any queries sent through the website.

And that I'm sorry to say is the full and absolute limit of my knowledge on
batch importing pictures.

Not to worry, Lucy. You've gone "above and beyond the call of duty" (to
coin a phrase....) in staying with this for so many days.

Many thanks for the trouble you've taken.

No problem at all :) Sorry we couldn't find a solution :-(

If it was me, I'd grab a beer, take the laptop outside, put on Radio 4
(www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/) and do it by hand... But then it's after
lunchtime, it's a Friday and it's very sunny (for the first time in
aaaaaaaagggggggeeeesssssss. Yay to spring!).
