Preserving functionality of autotext in a protected doc

I am using Word 97. I am creating documents with multiple pages. I have in
the header "Page X of Y" and need to protect using the "protect the document
for comments" function, so NOTHING can be changed. Unfortunately, this
causes the "Page X of Y" to not function at all. I tried putting in a
section break just below the header, but it doesn't help because I can only
protect by sections using the "protect the document for Forms" function.
Does anyone know of any way around this problem?

Thanks!

Hi =?Utf-8?B?RmVu?=,

Have you tried printing, with "Update fields" activated in Tools/Options/Print?

Note that the "Y" part of "X of Y" is notoriously buggy in Word 97.
