Prevent auto-highlighting of new email, which marks it as read

How can I prevent Outlook 2003 from highlighting new emails at the top of the
inbox before I manually highlight them? I'd rather the highlight stay on the
email I left it on rather than jumping up and marking a new email as read
(due to preview pane) before I'm ready to read it.

Here are a couple possibilities: 1) Turn off the Reading Pane. 2) Click
Tools>Options>Other>Reading Pane and adust the Reading Pane's behavior to
wait longer before marking the item as read or to not mark it as read at
all. Do you start up in Outlook Today (Tools>Options>Other>Advanced
Options>Startup in this folder)?

Thanks f or the help, Brian.
I wanted to keep the reading pane so I went and changed the setting
Tools>Options>Other>Reading Pane>"Wait ___ seconds before marking as read"
to 10. That should give me plenty of time to move the highlight to an
already read message if I want to.
