Preventing hackers from using my email address to send ads

I've been violated!

Someone hacked into my MSN email account, posed as me and sent to all my
contacts an ad for an electronics website, a site that appears to originate
in overseas (part of the website has Asian characters on it). How do I
prevent this from happening again? After this horrible violation I had my PC
cleaned of adware and any viruses, but is there anything else I can do to
prevent this from happening again? Thanks for your help!
