preventing users from modifying templates...

My users have some templates on the local drives and
occasionally add/modify styles and inadvertently modify
their templates.

Does anyone know of a way in which I could prevent the
live templates from being modified even though their on
the users local drive?

I tried to password protect the documents, but the users
complained that every time they opened their documents
they were presented with an extra pop up window.

Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

The only way you can modify a template is to open it from Word.
Double-clicking the document icon will create a new file based on the
template.
When they try to save it, a Save As dialog box will appear and the template
is perserved.

Alternatively, you can set the File Properties as Read-only to prevent
accidental saving. (If you can't save it, you can't overwrite the persisting
data)

This is *not* the only way a template can be modified. If you check "Add to
template" after modifying a style, this writes a change to the template. You
can also save macros, AutoText, shortcut key assignments, and toolbar
customizations (and custom toolbars) in templates without opening them.
