Previous Installation Detected (error code 1618)

I'm trying to install Office XP on a computer, and am getting error message
1618 telling me that a previous installation is in process. I have found
information about that error message on the Knowledge Base at Microsoft.com,
but no directions as to how to cancel a previous installation that's still
running. Any help is greatly appreciated.
