PRINT BLANK LINES WHEN DATA FIELDS ARE EMPTY

I've discovered that one of the online updates to Word
2002 has removed the options to "Don't print blank lines
when data fields are empty" and "Print blank lines when
data fields are empty", which have been available for
many years. I'm almost certain that these options were
still present in the original installation from an
upgrade CD. I have found this to be a real pain, as I
want the salutation line "Dear Mr Bloggs" to always
appear at 4 inches. A very short address could result in
the salutation appearing at the bottom of the window in a
window envelope. I cannot understand why these options
has been removed. Are they still available but hidden
somewhere?

I don't think the options have been available by default in any version of
Word 2002, but you can re-enable the old Mail Merge Helper and just use it
to modify this setting - Tools|Customize|Commands|select category All
Commands, then locate MailMergeHelper in the list of commands and drag it to
a toolbar or menu.

An alternative would be to put your address in a text box or frame so that
it always occupies the same vertical space regardless of the number of lines
in the address.

I sent this query on 15 September. I see the subject
heading and the heading of Peter Jamieson's reply in the
newsgroup but when I click on them I get "message
unavailable". Why?

No idea why - but FWIW I saw the message, which said:
