Print preview: sloppy programming?

More by way of comment than question, on the possibility that MS monitors this
group.

In Word 2003, unlike Word 2000, when you add Comments, the File > Print Preview
view widens the "paper" and shows the Comment in the right margin. This does
not really make any sense, in that your letter-size paper is still 8-1/2 x 11
and you cannot print things in the airspace to the right of the piece of paper.

A further aspect is even more misleading. If, elsewhere in the same document,
you create a table and "cheat" by extending it beyond the right margin (which
you can do, as long as you're still within the printable region), Print Preview
will not inform you correctly as to whether the table is too wide for 8-1/2 x
11. I.e., Print Preview will not simulate 8-1/2 x 11 paper and crop an
over-wide table; it will show the contents of the table as extending into the
"extra" right margin created by the Comment. You have to temporarily remove
the Comment to get the Print Preview paper-size back to normal and get a clear
view of whether the table is cropped or OK.

As such, in a document with Comments, Print Preview (notwithstanding the name)
no longer provides a realistic preview of what will appear on the printed page.

Is there a setting that will resolve this?

Thanks.

As long as you have Final with Markup selected on the Reviewing toolbar,
Print Preview is actually showing you what will print ("Document with
markup" is the default Print setting when you have Final with Markup or
Original with Markup selected). The document is printed at a reduced size to
allow for the marginal comments and markup, which would also allow the
oversized table to print.

If you change the view to Final, you will see that Print Preview shows the
table extending off the edge of the page.

Hi, HONYAKUKA. You can disable display and printing of comments and changes in the right margin by clicking on Tools | Options | Track Changes | uncheck the "Use balloons in Print and Web layout" box.
