Print Scrunching...

C

Cameron Powell

I have looked all over to find someone else having the same problem as me,
but I guess it isnt a very common thing. We have multiple systems where upon
printing everything becomes scrunched to the far left of the screen.
Rebooting the machine fixes this temporarily, but is there an actual fix? If
you need more details you can e-mail me at [email protected]

I don't know where you were looking, as this problem has been reported
repeatedly in this and other Word NGs. It appears that Word sometimes loses
track of the printer driver. Opening the Print dialog, selecting a different
printer, closing, then opening and selecting the desired one again seems to
jog its memory.

Well I wasn't exactly sure how to search for it, print scrunching was the
best description I could come up with and I couldn't find anything and I am
usually pretty good at that. Either way, is there a more permanent solution
then that? We get this problem quite often and it is a real annoyance to have
to close out of word and sometime restart to get things back to norm. Not to
mention it is scary as hell to have an important document do that, even
though it should go back to normal.

The reply that Bob Buckland often posts on this issue also suggests clearing
out temp files (see http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm).
AFAIK, there is no permanent solution. I assume you have applied all the
patches and service packs applicable to your version of Word? And that you
have downloaded the latest driver for your printer?

I will give that a try as well. I have applied all service packs and patches,
and I also have downloaded the most up to date drivers. We have multiple
printers here and no two are the same, yet most computers here have
experienced this problem. The computer that has this problem the most has
it's own printer hooked up. It's a Dell Photo Printer 720. If you find
anything out let me know. Thanks for the tips!

Hi Cameron,

I can understand that finding what to call this issue
can be a bit difficult. So far this Word 2003 print
problem has been described to as

piledup,
bunched up,
squished,
squashed,
scrunched,
overlapping,
something went crazy
letters typing on top of each other.

Part of the problem in addressing this issue
[Not that MS hasn't tried to put out some generic 'try
this to fix print problems in Word' articles :)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826845&FR=1
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826862&FR=1 ]
has been that folks who report it, never seem to come back with
any additional information on what worked went it went away :)

This is the first report that hasn't mentioned an HP printer
(Dell Photoprinter is a Lexmark, if I recall correctly)

It's apparently a glitch that causes
Word 2003 to lose track of the printer it's supposed to be
using (as listed in File=>Print).

Going to File=>Print and
changing the printer to another one (and back)
will often clear it temporarily.

If that works please let us know what happens if you
1. Set Word to use the correct printer
2. Close Word.
3. Cleanup and delete all left over
Word temp files using Start=>Search and the
search string of
~$*.*;*.tmp

4. Restart Word and open the same document you were
working on.

Do you have the MS Remove Hidden(personal) Data [RHD]
add-in installed or another Addin in Word? The RHD
add-in is one possible commonality.

Actually we don't have any HP printers at all. The two most commonly used
printers are the Canon iR 3570 and the Canon iR C6800. We also have a Ricoh
Aficio AP3200 and Ricoh Aficio AP4510. The two Canons use a special driver
designed by Canon, it's not PCL or PS, but UFR. The Ricoh drivers are both
PCL6. The Dell Printer is a Lexmark and we have another Lexmark printer in
office, but it isn't used with word. When it comes up again I will make sure
that whoever it happens tries those fixes. I know that rebooting always
works, but it would be nice to not have to save and close out of everything.
Thanks for all the help. If you find anything else out, please let me know.

Hi Cameron,

Thank you for the feedback :)

Were you able to check to see if the MS Remove Hidden Data
Add-in is installed? (Tools=>Templates and Add-ins]
In testing moving the temp file it created would stop
the problem from reocurring when restarting Word.

If it's not installed, then it's not relevant to the problem.

Nope, that add-in is not installed. Where would I find it at?
