print sequential invoice numbers

I am looking for a way to print sequential invoice numbers on carbonless
paper. To clarify, I want to print onto 3-part NCR paper, with the number
incrementing once every three sheets.

The method used may be determined by "when" you print. Are you
generating the invoice at the point of use? (keep track of last number)
Or, preprinting, use mail merge with EXCEL auto numbered sheet as the
data source.

I will be pre printing them.
I will give the excel trick a try, I think it will work.
