printer connection

Printing from Word 2008 on HP LaserJet 1012:
Most often I get a message on the HP software about trying to connect to printer. It may or may not then establish the connection and give "printer ready" message.
This does not happen with other applications.
The drivers are up to date.

If you're getting that far then it's quite unlikely that the problem is with
Word itself. The reason you're only experiencing the error when printing
from Word may very well be that different programs require different levels
of print service & Word is at the highest level.The program you're printing
from, however, basically requests the print services it needs from the OS
which then attempts to contact the printer via its driver software. It
sounds like that's where the breakdown is occuring.

If you're confident that you do have the most current driver it may simply
need to be reinstalled - drivers do corrupt, so just to play it safe I'd go
to the HP site, download the driver, then reinstall the printer.

The problem could also be with OS X. You didn't post your specific update
level for either it or Office & without that information it's difficult to
speculate further. Confirm that OS X is at 10.5.7, 12.1.7 for Office & run
Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions. It may not be a bad idea to reapply
the 10.5.7 update using the Combo Update from Apple Downloads if you
continue to experience the problem.

Another possibility is that there may be a font issue... OS X & printers [HP
in particular] are sometimes quite fussy about fonts, so if the above
suggestions don't resolve the problem that may be another area to explore.
