Printer not connected Msge

Why won't a file (excel 97) from another PC open up and
work on my laptop?

I take a file from desktop PC to alptop (via a memory
card) and double click on it to open it up.

I got a message at first saying that a printer was not
installed.. i installed one and got rid of that message...
now i'm away from the desk/printer I get a
message.. 'Printer not connected'

Can't take a printer with me...

any ideas? we are using Office 97

thanks in advance

You don't actually have to have a physical printer--installing the printer
driver is sufficient.

If I had the choice, I'd install the driver for the same physical printers that
I use. Then maybe the print previews on the laptop would match the print
previews and prints on the pc with the real printer.

Thanks Dave.. but the problem is not print preview, but
the fact that the file won't open at all!

any other ideas?

Did you install a printer driver to try it?

If no, I'd try that first.

(The printpreview was really just an aside.)

If you have a printer driver already installed...

Does the file open if you do it via File|open (within excel)?

If yes, I'd try reregistering excel (it can sometimes fix problems), but this
may not work, too.

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

If that didn't help, I'd start excel in safe mode to see what happens:

close excel
windows start button|Run
excel /safe

file|open your file.

If that worked, then Chip Pearson has some things to check when there are start
up problems.
