Printers - what is RPC Server?

I have built a new PC and istalled XP Pro + SP2 & Office 2003 (Student) -
when i try to install my hp3420 inkjet printer driver it fails at the last
hurdle! It complains that the 'RPC Server' is not there. I have tried both
the installation disk and HP's latest download with no success. I have
uninstalled, deleted, uninstalled...
I am frustrated as tthe printer worked on W98 and another XP Pro loaded
laptop!
