Printing borders & text

Laying out a 6"x9" (physical size) book with text margins
approx 0.75" on all four sides. On 8.5"x11" paper, in
addition to the text, I want to PRINT a 6"x9" border to
show book's physical size. MSWord limits border position
to 32 pt max from text or page edge, but I need more
space for margins. Is Word incapable of such a simple
layout process? Is there a workaround? Help, please!

I do this manually. I have both the border you describe and (for later, when
I send the CRC to the printer) crop marks set up as AutoText entries. The
border is by far the easier of the two: just View | Header, draw a 6" x 9"
rectangle anchored to the header (so it will repeat on every page), and
position it as needed.

Suzanne,

Thanks loads! I am stunned that I never knew about working
with headers the way you described, which from now on, I
will do. (Is that process explained in the Help Files
anywhere?) I used WordPerfect for years and became
assustomed to its wonderful intuitive capabilities;
MSWord, contrariwise, often seems to have been designed by
idiots. Maybe I don't give it enough credit, but how would
I have known that stuff about putting things OUTSIDE of
the header box to make them repeat? While I have your
attention, another brief question: why doesn't MSW give
some indication as to whether a file has been saved? The
alternative to knowing: obsessively save it. Thank you so
much for your invaluable help!

Suzanne,
I just went to the MVP website, which I'd never heard of
before, and had sudden wonderful feelings of relief and
satisfaction when I realized that there's a way to deal
with some of MSW's absolutely cheesy idiosyncrasies ...
probably. Thanks so much! John

This is a revelation, isn't it? For most users this comes the first time
they add a watermark. Perhaps unfortunately, MS has made the process of
adding a watermark so simple in Word 2002 and 2003 that users don't
understand that they're adding something to the header (which makes it very
difficult to know how to remove it when, for whatever reasons, the dialog
itself does not suffice). For more on headers and footers, see
http://home.earthlink.net/~wordfaqs/HeaderFooter.htm
