Printing labels

Jeff

I have bought some Avery J8160 labels.

I used Tools > Envelopes & Labels in Microsoft Word 2000 to create a new
document whole page of one address. I set it to use that particular Avery
label (J8160) and A4 is selected in the Print Setup settings.

Unfortunately the printed addresses do not match the labels properly so some
of the address is cut off on about 6 of the 21 labels.

For info I had this problem on two computers, one running Windows 98, one
running ME. The printer (the same in both cases) is an HP Deskjet 990cxi.

I'm not sure what's going wrong. What other settings should I check and what
should they be?

Any help would be much appreciated as I have a lot of Xmas card labels I
want to get done!

Thanks

Sounds like you haven't set the label spacing correctly.

I find the best way with Christmas cards is to purchase cards that all have
the same size envelopes. And print onto the envelope via Tools/ Mail Merge
in Word, that is if you are using a data base for your address records. You
will be able to use any kind of text style and size, looks much nicer than
labels. Any size or shape of envelope can be used by setting it up in Page
Set-up Custom size.
Save it as a Document template for future use or those last minute cards you
forgot to send.

Any Christmas card I receive with computer-printed labels will remain
unopened.

One possibility is that the printer driver is interpreting the table cells
incorrectly (Word sets out labels in a table). Try downloading and installing
the most up-to-date printer driver from the HP website.

The other possibility is that the Avery Label Wizard isn't working correctly.
(MS licences this for Word to make labels). Check the Avery website whether
there isn't an updated Avery Label Wizard for your version of Word.

So you'll never see the long hand-written message inside. Sad.

I prefer to allocate my time at this busy time of year by writing the
message in the card rather than addressing the envelope. Writing the
messages takes a lot of time and thought. Writing the address merely
takes a lot of time.

I have same problem - the left hand edge was printing off the label and the spacing between labels is wrong. And the paper was sized for Letter and not A4.

I think they either they have have just set it up all wrong or we both have the wrong template! I have rejigged it by

1) set paper to A4

1) go into [TABLE, set height and width] and set cell width to 6.3cm

2) go into [TABLE, set height and width] and set cell height to 109pt. This does mean it overflows into another page because it reformats for 10 rows and you only need 7. Just delete the extra rows.

As I say, we may have the wrong template but, hell, it works ..
