Private Character Editor

When I copy a private character from Character Map and paste it to Excel or
Word, it is replaced by a Chinese character.
When using Microsoft Works, the character is the right one.
Also in the Character Map the top 5 & 3/4 pixels of the private characters
are missing.
I am using Windows 7. The problem didn't exist with Vista.
Compatibility problem?
