Hi
I wish to move my database into the private folder outside the root
directory, but was told by fasthosts that frontpage is restricted to the
htdocs folder,is this true?
I am using FP 2003

the _private folder is within the fp structure.

you should consider moving the db (.mdb?) to the fpdb folder FrontPage
creates when you do:
tools/ web settings/ database tab/ add database. FrontPage will set the
permissions for you and create a folder called fpdb where you can put the
db. it's secure in that it won't feed to a browser.

this is all possible even if you're not using FrontPage's functions to
connect to the db or query it. you will have to update any non-FrontPage
info reflecting the changed path to the .mdb.

That is not true. Some hosts offer a separate space outside of the web tree which adds security. If the host does not offer it then
the next best thing is a folder that does not have browse permissions such as fpdb or _private

Thanks for the replies.
Fasthosts does offer a private folder outside the htdocs ,and this is the
folder that they advise you put databases.This has been an ongoing concern
for me because I am recieving conflicting messages. Some say that the fpdb
folder is secure and others say you should move the databases out of the
root/htdocs.Is the fpdb folder secure.if not does FP have the ability to
store databases outside the htdocs?

Paul,

If the host allows you to store the database outside of the web root, then they have to give you FTP
access to upload the database to the folder.

FP can not access in content outside the web root (extensions are installed).

If you choose to keep the database in the web, then let FP create the fpdb folder and store the
database within the fpdb folder.

I've never had FrontPage make the db, just set the permissions for it
(global.asa) and put it in the fpdb. it's a nice way to set permissions
quickly even if that's all you use FrontPage for in regards to the db. IMHO.
