Problem encountered with Office 2003 installed on new Vista

This is in the category of "for what it's worth".

I'd like to pass along my experience loading Office Pro 2003 on a machine
running Vista Ultimate. It may have been discussed before; but, since I'm
new to this newsgroup, the "batch" of questions/comments in the first
download I received did not comment on this issue.

I recently purchased a new high-end laptop running Vista Ultimate. When I
loaded Office 2003, everything seemed to work just fine. But, the only
animated "assistant" available was the paperclip. When I attempted to choose
another assistant, I received a "not enough memory" error message. So, I
was either stuck with irritating Mr. Paperclip or turn off the assistant
entirely. I posted the problem on the Dell Forum site. The one response I
got was informing me there "ain't" no conflicts. When I researched MS's
Knowledge Base, I could find nothing. I finally was fortunate enough to
stumble across this very issue that someone inquired of the group and a
person answered, giving the workaround. They were told MS knows about this
problem but, so far, has not addressed it. They were also told to go to the
site below. I did so. And, following the instructions, which were fairly
easy, I was able to get a fix and now have my favorite office assistant
back. I'm informed that this also works for Office 2000 and XP.

Hope this helps,

Ernie

Hi Ernie
Thanks a lot.
I didn't realize, that I got this problem - never using the assistent.
But I tried, and ran into exactly your trouble.
It's solved - thanks again

You're welcome, BirgirH. It pleases me to know my "experience" was able to
help someone.

I wish you well,

Ernie

The solution that I found to the "not enough memory" message when trying to
use the gallery to choose an Office Assistant was the following:

1. I f Office 2003 is not installed in your Windows Vista computer setup,
then install it;
2. Open the cd disk and leaving the Office 2003 disk in, push it back in;
3. You get a small window asking if you want to run setup, say yes;
4. Say yes to the next small window;
5. You'll get a medium-sized window showing the contents of the cd disk,
then click on the Program "Setup - Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper";
6. In the next window choose ADD or REMOVE FEATURES;
7. In the next window check "choose advanced customization of applications"
and leave a checkmark in all the other programs;
8. You'll get a window listing all Office Programs - click the plus sign +
next to Office Shared Features;
9. Click the plus sign + next to "Office Assistant"
10. You should see the list of the different Office Assistants;
11. To get the complete program click and highlight "Office Assistant" and
click UPDATE at the bottom of the window;
12. You'll see the installation bar, and then a small window telling you
that the update was successful;
13. Open Word 2003 and open the Office Assistant.
14. You might get a message telling you that there is a problem and do you
want to correct it?
15. Say yes, the problem is corrected and you have your Office Assistant back!

This is as good as it gets for now.
