Problem: Graphics in Headers on mail not appearing, no automatic

I have been using Outlook successfully for a while and something weird is
starting to happen. If I open a mail in my inbox, the top of the mail, where
the grahpics for reply, forward, etc. are is blank. If I close it and open
it again, I see the graphics.

I also notice it is not automatically trashing the deleted mail when I close
the program, even though I have set this preference. It also does not seem
to be automatically getting mail on startup.

What's going on? How can I fix this?
