Problem Grouping Dates in Pivot Table

T

Tiggerformom

I get a message that reads "can not group that selection" when I try to group
dates in Pivot table. I went back to my original source and verified that
the dates were in date format and not text... Then I refreshed the data and
tried again to no avail. Did this ever happen to you? What did you do?
Please help!!
Thanks

If there are blank cells in the date field, you won't be able to group
the date. Perhaps you have blank cells in the table, or included blank
rows at the end of the source range.

As Debra said you likely have blank cells, OR some of your dates are text.

If it is blank cells then you have a couple of choices:-

1) Remove all entries with a blank cell in the date field - Select Column, do
Edit / Go To / Blank cells / Then hit Edit / Delete / Entire Row

2) Put nominal dates in all the blank cells. I do this a lot with Data dumps
from our pricing system, because for example all the headers in the Work
Breakdown Structure do not have dates against them and so end up blank in the
output I get. I simply pick the earliest date in my list, do Edit / Go To /
Blank cells, type that date and then hit CTRL+ENTER which enters that date into
all the blank cells in that column - Those records are irrelevant anyway so
doesn't skew any of my data.

Now you should be able to group your data.
