problem inserting excel 2003 object into word documents

Using MS Office Professional 2003 I cannot insert an Excel object into a Word
document.
It converts it to a picture and does not allow editing.
It then says that Word cannot edit this type of object.

Has anyone else seen this and is there a fix?

I've got a user with a very similar problem. We're using Office Pro 2003
under Windows XP Professional. When she goes to the Insert Menu and chooses
Object, then the Create New tab and chooses Microsoft Excel Worksheet, an
Excel Chart is inserted instead of a Worksheet. I would be very interested
in a fix.
