problem inserting figures

When trying to insert a figure into Word, the filename doesn't appear in the
filename text box when I click on it. If I try to insert, the program locks
up for as much as 30 minutes but eventually loads the picture. If I type-in
or cut and paste the filename it will usually be inserted with-in a
reasonable time but not always. Anybody know why this happens and how it can
be corrected. It has been going on for quite a few months now and nobody on
the Word newgroups has responded despite repeated requests for help during
this time.

What version of Word are you using (including the build revision)
as shown in Help=>About?

What version of Windows are you using?

Are you on a standalone PC or one on a network and where is the
item you're trying to load stored?

What type of 'figure' are you inserting and what method are you
using?

MS Office XP Professional (Brazilian version)
Word 2002 (10.5815.4219) SP-2
Windows XP Home 5.1.2600 SP-1 Compilation 2600
Standalone PC
Doesn't matter where the image is stored - HD, floppy, & CD
Doesn't matter what image - type .jpg .gif .png etc.

Hi Rick,

Is the Windows Version English or Brazilian?

What are the steps you're using to insert the figure?

If you hold down the ctrl key when starting Word do
you get the same problem?

If so, if you then, before starting Word
(A) Go to Start=>All Programs=>Accessories=>System Tools
and use Disk cleanup
and then
(B) Use Start=>Run and type %temp% <Enter>
and clear out the temp file folder
and then
(c) From Start=>Search
locate and delete files found by searching using
~$*.do*;*.tmp
then starting Word

does that help (if you're using Norton Antivirus also
disable from inside that software the Office AV plugin.
