Problem Installing MS Office 2000

I had the trial version of MS Office 2007 installed on my new laptop, which
expired a couple of months ago.

Now I am trying to install MS office 2000 and the initial set-up (i.e.,
loading the CD, entering the product key #, etc) goes through fine, but the
computer sits for hours with a window open that says "Please wait while
Windows configures Microsoft Office 2000," but nothing happens.

Any ideas why this is happening? thank you in advance for your suggestions.
