Problem on HKCR\mailto key after installing Office 2003

I need help fix my registry. I can't install IE 7 because of this problem.

I bought Sony VAIO PC + Office 2003 60 days trial pre-installed.

I bought Office 2003 Pro. So, I uninstalled trial version, and installed
Office 2003 Pro + SP2(SP3?). No problem. ( about 2 month ago )

I didn't realize at that time, but when I installed Office 2003 Pro, it
broke registry
on my account. It was "HKCR\mailto" & "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto"

What happened was it broke permission to these keys. I can't access them,
I can't modify them, I can't change permission, I can't delete them.
Even with Administrator account.

I get "Access deny" error message.

By the way, I don't use Outlook 2003, I use Outlook Express. They work just
fine.

Because of that, I can't install Internet Explorer 7. I get error messages
relating to
"HKCR\mailto" & "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\mailto" keys.

It seem I have to re-install XP to fix this problem. But I was to avoid
that.

Is there any way to fix this corrupted registry???

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, MattK,

I'm no registry expert, but could it be that the access is denied because
the key is in use? Have you tried launching Windows in safe mode and
resolving the issue?
