Problem opening files in Office 2003

N

nstanton

Background: Windows XP Pro (all SP/updates applied) running MS Office 2003
(all SP/updates applied).

Problem: I start Word/Excel etc. Select File -> Open...click the file I want
and the application hangs. I have to go into Task Manager and kill it.

If I open a folder in Windows Explorer, I can double click the file and it
opens right up. I can also open the "Recent" files from the Task Pane within
Office.

Any ideas?

I am having the exact same problem. And it just started yesterday/today
after I installed the patch tuesday updates.

Users are reporting that uninstalling KB908531 solves the problem.
Microsoft is working on it.

I had one user out of 15 that experienced this problem. All Office 2003 apps
would hang when he attempted to open files in this manner. Uninstalling
KB908531 did resolve the problem.

I am also having same problem at my works since this morning. There two users
who can not opne documents and Excel sheets. Word and Excel both hang. If I
disconnect network drives or personal drive, then File, OPEN works in Word
and Excel. Do you think that I should also look for KB908531? Is this patch
installed on Workstations or servers only?

I will appreciate your help.

This patch appied to Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003. Here's the URL to
the Security Bulletin:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-015.mspx

Microsoft has put some information out regarding a registry fix for this
problem which you can find in the forums here, but they are also supposed to
be putting out a patch to correct the problem this coming tuesday.

Remember to disable Automatic updates on any PC that has experienced a
problem from this patch, and that you have fixed, until the new fix comes out!
