Problem Opening MDB Files

W

Wayne Wengert

I am using Access 2003 on a WinXP Pro box. Things have been working fine
when using access but a few days ago I started having a problem where, if I
double click an mdb file in explorer, Access starts up but the file never
opens. I have to Alt/Ctl/Del to end the Access session. If I start Access
and then use the File/Open to open the mdb file, everything works fine.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? Any thoughts on how to correct it?

Hi Wayne,

Any chance you are using Norton AntiVirus on your PC? Here is a KB article
that discusses this error message when attempting to embed or link a Word
document in Access. I don't know if Norton AntiVirus could cause a similar
problem when attempting to embed or link other types of files:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=295824

The only other KB article I could find, which might be helpful to you, is
this one:

Please disregard. I intended to post this answer to a different question, asked by compsci_Jack.

Sorry.

Tom;

I think you pointed out the problem - even if unintentionally! The mdb files
I've been using do have linked tables pointing to a SQL Server. And, yes, I
have Norton anti virus installed.

Hi Wayne,

Are you saying that you can now double-click a .mdb file in Windows
Explorer, and it opens as expected? If so, did you use Method 1 or Method 2
(or both) from this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=295824 ?

If my unintentional reply helped solve your problem, then that truly is
amazing!
