problem opening up Word when double clicking on files to open

T

toddsilva

I am using Office 2000, with Win 2000 Pro O/S. I
typically open files by double clicking on them in Win
Explorer or on the desktop. I am now having a problem
opening docs in Word, let me explain:

When I double click to open a file created in Word, I get
a grey dialog box with the "X" in the red circle. The
message in the box says "Cannot find the file [filename]
(or one of its components). Make sure the path and
filename are correct and that all required libraries are
available." If I open Word and then open the file from
within Word, no problem.

I can still open other files by the double click method,
eg, Excel, PDF, MP3, WAV, etc.

If Word is already open, however, and I double click to
open a new file, I do not get this error, and it
successfully opens the new file.

Also, if I click on a Word doc e-mail attachment icon in
Outlook, I get a dialog box with exclamation mark in
yellow triangle that says "The system cannot find the file
specified."

This seems like a Win Explorer issue, although it only
happens with Word files. I started having this problem
over the weekend on an installation that is 2 years old,
very robust, and has never seen a problem like this.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Todd,

You can use the following command to recreate the file associations
for Word. Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.

Beth,

I did some more research, and it looks like this is
explained in Knowledge Base article 209768. I checked my
NORMAL.DOT template, however, and there are no macros as
discussed in this article. One more thing, this exact
same issue occurs with one other program, a non Microsoft
product. So I am now back to thinking this is a Windows
Explorer problem/issue.

Thank you Terry,

I did that, remembering it from another e-mail thread that

keep in mind that this is occuring with another, non-MS

looks to me to be a Win Explorer or file association

did not resolve either. Looking forward to your next

Hi Todd,

You can use the following command to recreate the file
associations
for Word. Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.

I am using Office 2000, with Win 2000 Pro O/S. I
typically open files by double clicking on them in Win
Explorer or on the desktop. I am now having a problem
opening docs in Word, let me explain:

When I double click to open a file created in Word, I
get
a grey dialog box with the "X" in the red circle. The
message in the box says "Cannot find the file
[filename]
(or one of its components). Make sure the path and
filename are correct and that all required libraries
are
available." If I open Word and then open the file
from
within Word, no problem.

I can still open other files by the double click
method,
eg, Excel, PDF, MP3, WAV, etc.

If Word is already open, however, and I double click
to
open a new file, I do not get this error, and it
successfully opens the new file.

Also, if I click on a Word doc e-mail attachment icon
in
Outlook, I get a dialog box with exclamation mark in
yellow triangle that says "The system cannot find the
file
specified."

This seems like a Win Explorer issue, although it only
happens with Word files. I started having this
problem
over the weekend on an installation that is 2 years
old,
very robust, and has never seen a problem like this.

Thanks for your help.

Terry,

Yes, they are showing the correct icon. And I just
created a test doc saved as RTF, it displayed the correct

Hi Todd,

Still sounds like a file association problem. Occasionally I have to
delete the Registered File Type for Word, reboot, and then use the
winword /r command. Don't worry - I've done this 100s of times. :)

- Open the Windows Explorer
- Go to Tools/Folder Options
- Select the File Types tab
- Located "Microsoft Word Documents"
- Delete the File Type
- Reboot
- Go to Start/Run and run: winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.

Thank you Beth. I followed your instructions to the
letter, and this still did not correct the problem. In
earlier posts in this thread, I indicated I am also having
same issue with two other programs and file associations,
non-Office, non-MS. I work with my PC every day
throughout the day and I know its behavior very well; I
have also noticed some odd behaviors recently and a
critical program is started to crash for which the support
group cannot find a resolution. Given all of this, I have
chosen to reinstall Win2000 and all software, ie, start
over. No one ever looks forward to this, but it is
critical that my system run bug free, and I am concerned
that it is getting enough little glitches in it, that now
is the time to do this. I appreciate all your help and
the other advisors. Talk you again with a new system!
