Problem Printing from Office

I have Office Developers version 2002 that has suddenly stopped printing
anything be it Word, Excel, Access etc. I might add that Notepad will also
not print however Outlook Express, Explorer 7.0 and even my graphics program
will print just fine. My printer is an HP DeskJet 882C which has worked
until yesterday just fine. One other oddity is that I have a dot file made
up in Word to print a sheet of business cards and that will print from Word
but if I type in a new document it will not print. The printer seems to go
through the motions but not a single mark on the paper.

Any input into this would be greatly appreciated.

How many colors show up on a test page? Perhaps the Black ink tank is
empty. And you can only see prints that use the 3 colors to make black.

All show up fine as a matter of fact I added both a new black and color cart
just a couple of days ago. It also prints color pictures fine from Paint
Shop Pro. It seems to just be my Office programs and Notepad.

No I only typed a line to see if it would print so it was just plan black
type. I also tried to print out a spread sheet from excel with the same
nothing from the printer. Also Outlook won't print even email however
OutlookExpress does as does Explorer.

I can also add that black will print but only if there is another color text
on the page. For example:

This is a test (this line is black or automatic)
This is a test (if this line is in a color other than black both lines will
print however if both are black nothing prints but only in Office apps.)

Ok problem solved if there is any color on a page regardless it will make
black. If it is just black it doesn't print so it seems that brand new
cartridge of black in lasted about 2 days. I put in another new black and
all is back to normal. At any rate it seems the older printers like the HP
DeskJet 882C will work missing black if there is some other color on the
page. Thanks for your assistance.

You're welcome, glad to hear the cause identified. Yes, the printer
drivers are quite the issue. Sort of the "self-healing" software. They
can really mask the real problem.

I've had this printer since Win 98 to now with Media Center and never ran
into this before. But then this is the first time I've had a cart of ink run
out with little or no printing in a few days. It was probably sitting on
their shelf for a few years and dried out. I'm sure glad you suggested
printing in color from Word or I would have never figured out what the
problem was. ;-)
