Problem Publishing to Web with Publisher 2007

I cannot get publisher to publish to my web site. I have followed the Help
instructions. I use "Publish to Web..." under the "File" button. When I
type in the file name, http://www.mysite.com, Publisher 2007 gives me an
error message saying, "The filename you have entered is too long or contains
illegal characters. Try again using a different name." My website name is
only 9 letters (no numbers or symbols). When I enter www.mysite.com, nothing
happens. I do not get to the screen for my username or password. My web
host assures me everything is set up correctly for their part.

Please help.

This article was written prior to the introduction of IE7.

These instructions work with IE6, but not IE7. Be sure to test your site for
the Frontpage server extensions being installed and working.

It is written for Pub 2007, but if you are using IE7 instead of IE6, then
the directions for using Vista also would apply to Pub 2003. FTP and HTTP
uploading has changed with the introduction of IE7 and Vista. Pay particular
attention to the instructions for FTP uploading in Vista. You can probably
modify these to use HTTP and mapping a network drive.

If you are not using a form on your site, I would suggest that you switch to
FTP uploading protocol, and consider downloading and installing the free FTP
client FileZilla:
http://filezilla-project.org/ It is likely to be easier for you in the long
run. You should also peruse the documentation on this page:

I worked around the problems with Publisher 2007 and successfully uploaded my
site. I never could get Publisher to work as stated in the Publisher 2007
Help page about Publishing to Web by typing in "http://mysite.com" in the
file name. However, I discovered two methods to overcome this problem.

The first method is to save a file on my computer then download using
Internet Explorer. First, go to "File," then "Publish to Web." Create a new
file using any name you want. I'll call it yourstorage file. Double click
on it. In the "File name", it is very important to leave the default name of
"index". Press save.

Next, open Internet Explorer. Type in "ftp.yoursite.com". Put in username
(obtained from your web host) and password. Drag the index.html and
index_files (or all the files contained in your storage file) from
yourstorage file into the ftp file of your web page.

The second method is to connect to the ftp file of your web page. Create a
yourstorage file containing an index and index_file (or all of your index
files) as described above. Next, connect to the ftp file of your web page by
going to "File", "Publish to Web", "Tools", "Map Network Drive", "Connect to
a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures". You then
will start the "Add Network Location Wizard". Press "Choose a custom network
location" and type in ftp://ftp.yoursite.com. Hit "Next", put in your user
name, next, a name for your network location, and finish. Your ftp file with
named "ftp://ftp.yoursite.com/ should appear. Drag your index and index_file
or files from yourstorage file into your ftp file.

Hope this helps people with my same problem. Best of luck.

for the http:// publishing method your site has to have FPSE installed and
working for it to work.
if they were working and you used ftp then that would break the frontpage
server extensions and http won't work unless the fpse are repaired.
