Problem syncing my Blackberry software with outlook

I receive the following error: microsoft visual c++ runtime library runtime
error abnormal program termination
When trying to Sync my desktop software with outlook calendar. The
blackberry website says : Microsoft Outlook contains a corrupt entry or is
installed as Internet Mail Only type. how do I figure out what is wrong and
fix it.

I have found that the problem was caused by having an attachment in one of my
calendar events. when this event was deleted the problem went away. I would
still like to understand why this has happened.
