problem with arrangement of fields in address block

my merge results look like this:
"firstname,lastname,address1,city,state,postalcode."
I am not able to click in and add spaces or punctuation. the address box
formatting seems to be non-existent. Nor does matching fields have any effect
on the data. please help me!

What version Publisher are you using? What data program are you using for the
merge? If you are using Excel have you titled the fields?

I am using Publisher 2003, I believe, and the comparable version of excel.

The fields in my excel file have the titles that appear as I have noted. I
just know there is something very basic that I am not doing, as I have never
done a mail merge before, but I have followed the instructions of the mail
merge wizard and all the info I was able to get online. Could the fact that
my excel file came from an online data source have any effect on this matter?
