Problem with attachments after upgrade from 2004 to 2008

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC
Email Client: pop

Ever since I upgraded to 2008, when I send an email with an attachment, the attachment gets compressed as a .zip file that neither I nor the recipient of the email can open. This happens whether or not the attachment was created in Word 2008 or an earlier version.

How do I turn off the compression?

In the Entourage preferences, under the 'Compose' section, uncheck the
option to compress attachments.

Note that _some_ attachments still need to be compressed - this is stuff
like folders and document 'bundles' (Pages documents, TexEdit RTF docs
etc) because these are just folders of data that are treated in a
special way by the mac OS.
