Problem with cross-references to footnotes when converting to PDF

I don't know whether the following is a bug in Microsoft Word or in
Acrobat 6.0. I posted this on the Acrobat help site - but I didn't
receive any helpful replies. So I figured I'll try here too.

I am having a problem converting a Microsoft Word document to PDF.
Specifically, superscripted cross-references to footnotes, do not show
up in the in the PDF document (both when viewed through Acrobat Reader
and when printed out).

When one creates a cross-reference to an existing footnote in Word,
the references (e.g. the number of the footnote) initially appears in
the same font style as the surrounding text. One often wants to have
the cross-reference superscripted (i.e. when the goal is to use the
same footnote more than once). To do this, one has to manually
superscript the reference by changing its format.

When I convert my document to PDF, the original footnote references
show up; however, the cross-references do not. If I leave the
cross-references un-superscripted, they *do* show up. If (for
experimentation) I subscript the cross-references, they do not show
up. If I make other modifications to the cross-references (e.g. font
size, spacing) they do show up. Also, every other superscript,
subscript shows up.

In short, this bug seems to be limited to:
superscripted or subscripted cross-references to footnotes.
This means that one cannot reuse an existing footnote (an important
feature) in Microsoft Word, and convert the document to PDF.

More importantly - this problem did *not* exist in Acrobat 5, so I now
have tons of Microsoft Word documents, that coverted fine with Acrobat 5,
that no longer work with Acrobat 6.

The relevant specifications are:
Microsoft Word 2002
Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional - with 6.0.1 update
Windows XP Professional - Version 5.1.2600
HP Notebook NC6000
(Note - I have "Convert Footnote and Endnote Links" set in the "Adobe
PDF" settings.)

I've tried the following variations (none of which solved the problem):
Acrobat
-------
Compatibility (Acrobat 5.0, Acrobat 6.0)
Object Level Compression (Tags Only, Off)
Embed all fonts (on, off)
When embedding fails (Warn and continue, Cancel Job)
Word
----
Different fonts (Arial, Times Roman)
Different font sizes

I've also confirmed that the problem is with Acrobat Writer and not
Acrobat Reader. When the PDF is created with Acrobat 6.0, the problem
occurs with versions 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 of Acrobat Reader.

There are at least three ways to convert Word to PDF: 1) use the "Convert to
PDF" button on the Acrobat toolbar, 2) print to Acrobat PDFWriter, and 3)
print to Acrobat Distiller. Try one of the other ways.

(2) actually does fix this specific problem... However, I no longer have
"Bookmarks, ..." in Acrobat Reader 6.0; so this causes more problems than it
fixes.

Thanks for the suggestions - but there is still not a good solution.

Out of curiosity, does anyone from Microsoft actually monitor these forums?

Not very often. This is a peer-to-peer newsgroup where users post
questions and other users try to answer. Occasionally somebody from
Microsoft MSFT in Mesopotamia or someplace like that drops in...
