problem with dbf files!!!

Leo

I have a pent4/dell - with windows 2000 and office 03

my access program does not want to work with dbf files.

dbf files is the way I get a lot tables senht to me and then must import
them into an access database.

if I double click on the dbf file, Access is opened and I get the "The
Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object <name>. Make sure the
object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly."

if I open a functional access database and try to import it via "get
external data", I get the same message - "The Microsoft Jet database engine
could not find the object <name>. Make sure the object exists and that you
spell its name and the path name correctly."

there appears to be no errors with the object exisiting and being spelled
correctly!

I have no problem opening these dbf files from excel??

what's the problem ??

Try File / Get External Info / Import

The delima is that Access may try to find an Index file, and when it's not
present, it bombs. Excel is a little less discriminent, so you may have to
save as Excel then import to Access, barring that pesky 65k row limit.

thanks yours .. Access says it will/can import dbf files ... and I've the
taken the correct steps. are you saying that access will not import dbf?
i've failures on the last two versions of access

the error messages nor the misc help docs i've found on this subject do not
say anything about looking for an index the possibility of "bombing" if one
can't be found...

You obviously can't OPEN the dbf file with ms-access.

You also can't open a word document with ms-access either.

You also can't open a auto-cad drawing document with ms-access either.

So, someone along the way has associated the .dbf extension with ms-access,
that is a problem.

however, regardless of the above accident, and information, I have no
problems at all importing .dbf files into ms-access

When you try and import, you go file->get external data->

You then select what version of the .dbf file you want to import.

So, next question is what version of dbase are you trying to import the
files from?

Usually, just try selecting dbaseIV, or dbaseIII from the dropdown list..and
import that. I am even able to import FoxPro 2.6 files using the dbaseIV
from the selection box.

Also, if you have more then one dbf file, you might want to test that, as
often tyring to open a file with the WRONG program can actually damange the
file....

I too have the same problem. I did identify the type of file as db III and I
still got the same message.

any suggestions?

I believe the dbf filenames cannot exceed 8 characters plus a dot plus a
three-letter extension.
