Problem with default operation with tab key

I have just reinstalled Windows and Word 2000. I saved my Normal.dot
file (with several thousand lines of macros) but some of my preferred
settings got lost and I'm trying to recreate them.

The one that is driving me nuts is, what happens when I press Tab at
the beginning of a line. The default setting is to move the left
Indent setting by the distance to the first tab, or 0.5".

But I don't want that. I want the margin to stay where it is and for
Word to insert a tab character there.

Where can this behavior be set?

Hi Steve,

From the Tools menu, select AutoCorrect Options and then go to the
AutoFormat As You Type tab and uncheck the "Set left- and first-indent with
tabs and backspaces" box.

If I'm not mistaken, this setting is in the same place in Word 2000 that it
was in previous versions, on the Edit tab of Tools | Options: "Tabs and
backspace set left indent."

Doug, thanks for the tip. However,

1. That option is not available at the location you describe.

2. Word is not doing this any more. That's good, but I can't think of
anything I did.

Maybe it heard me when I threatened to uninstall it and start over?!

More seriously: Is there an option setting about this in the
"Compatibility" section?

That was it, thank you.
