Problem with E-mail Alert

I have rules set up so incoming e-mail is directed to various folders. Since
upgrading to Office 2003, I no longer receive an e-mail alert when new mail
arrives. In the previous version of Outlook, I would hear a sound and see the
envelope at the bottom of the screen. Is it possible for Outlook to give an
alert for all new mail regardless of whether it arrives in the inbox or
another folder?

You will need to enable an additional step in Outlook rules for that mail to
display a desktop alert and play a sound.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Tammy asked:

Milly,
so what are the steps I need to take to see an "envelope" icon in the task
bar? I don't have rules to sort my mail so they all go into Inbox nor do I
need the sound. The only alert I have now is that opaque window which pops
to show the sender name and subject etc. But once that goes away, I don't
have any other indication that I have new mail unless I open my Outlook.
