Problem with indexing. Search returns no results.

One of my users has encountered this problem:

Vista SP2
Office 2007 Enterprise 2007

Searching in Outlook 2007 returns no results. Attempted to uncheck option to
index mailbox causes this error -> "A problem was encountered while trying to
change which data files to index. Some of those changes may not have been
saved."

Scanpst / Scanost does not show any errors.

In Windows indexing options, Microsoft Office outlook does not show up in
the list "Index these locations".

Any suggestions on how to fix this error?

Yup! Tried rebuilding the index and resetting to defaults. The issue is that
after rebuilding/resetting, Outlook 2007 still does not show up in the list
of index locations in Vista's indexing options. I'll try a reinstall of
outlook 2007 to see if that helps.

Better is to remove the entire Office 2007 suite if you installed Outlook as
part of that. It's about just as fast as just removing Outlook but can give
you better results. After that, you will have to reinstall Office 2007 SP2
and additional updates again indeed.

The problem is windows desktop search is not working properly. You need remove the windows desktop search and windows serach from add remove programs and from registry and then reinstall the application. The steps are given below.

1- Windows Desktop search required some updates before installing it on the system so we have to install them as required , and these updates included in the windows desktop search file package
2- Uninstall Windows Search and restart the system, then remove registry entries related for this software from the windows registry.

Go to the registry and remove windows desktop search key and windows search key from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft

3- Extract the installation files from executable file package (WindowsSearch-KB940157-XP-x86-enu) by using winzip to be created as this folder directory C:\WindowsSearch-KB940157-XP-x86-enu
4- Under this windows search directory folder there is update folder ,under it click on ifilterssetup setup (Hotfix Package) to install this update
5- Then install windows search by using wdssetup, at the end of this installation you will get congratulation massage and press finish.

Now the windows desktop search will start indexing from the beginnig.

Open the outlook and try searching. It will not display the result if it takes some time to complete the indexing. But It will work after completing indexing.

Thanks and all the best.
