Problem with MS Word Files

R

Richard

Before I start let me just say I already contacted Microsoft and they gave
the standard form email stating that they no longer support the product.
However my problem happens in every version of Word, so far.

Problem:

I delete something from my word document and its file size doesn’t decrease
to the right size. I open the document up in a text editing program to see
everything and the data is still there, but when I open it in word its not
there.

Example:

This was my test case
1) created a new word doc, its size is was 11kb.
2) added some stuff to it. its size is now 48kb.
3) reopened the doc and deleted everything. Its size decreased to 40kb not
11kbs.
4) open the document in a text editing program and the data you delete is
still there.

Conclusion:

This means the more you modify a Word document the more junk you will still
have hidden in it taking up file space and it could even corrupt your file in
the future. Which is the problem I'm having now; large file sizes and
corrupted data.

I've invested a lot of time and energy into my documents and they are going
to be useless very near in the future.

I'm puzzled, they still support 2002 and 2003. And yes there are reasons
that "deleted" material isn't. Try telling the folks what version you're
working with.

My apologies, the mainstream support for Office XP (2002) went away in July.

Are you using any Track changes, Or saving "Versions".

I'm not using track changes or save versions. I also turned off allow fast
saves.

I think the other part of my problem, the part about having corrupt files is
from using tables in my document. I dont think it's related to the file size
issue.

i was curious and recreated the steps you
mentioned. But in conclusion, there was no
data visible in the text editor or back into
the word program.

clearly you have a serious issue.

One test that
you havn't done is to open the text editor with
a flawed document that should not have any data but
still does. On it (the text version) modify or add data then
save it and open it in word.

your test should show that the original deleted data still does
not appear in word but the additional text from the text
editor does now...

is this true?

There is a lot that goes into a Word "document" as opposed to a good ol'
plain text file. All the formating, table configraition, and of course
the ability to Undo puts a lot of stuff in the file that isn't visible
in the viewed document. As to the tables/coruption issue. Would the info
in the tables be better in say an Excel spreadsheet or maybe an Access
database?

Hi Richard,

If saving the file again after turning off
[x] Allow Fast Saves in Tools=>Options=>Save
doesn't decrease the file size what happens if
you use File=>Save As
and save to a new file name or save as a Web page,
close Word then reopen the file and save back to
a .doc filename?

Are you using a template or document with added Styles?
