problem with office 2000

The last time I turned on my computer and went to my word
program I discovered that all of my documments had dots
between every letter and paragraph markings. How do I
eliminate these. It is difficult for me to type and read
these documments in this format.

toggled with CTRL+*

As Graham says, this is a toggle (Ctrl+* or click the Show/Hide ¶ button),
