"Problem with one or more installed help files" - Office 2007 Pro

I recently bought and installed Office 2007 Pro, on my Windows XP Dell PC, to
replace the existing Office 2002/XP.

It's the genuine article, registered with and validated by, Microsoft!

I subsequently downloaded all available priority (inc SP2) and optional
(except Infopath) downloads.

Whenever I try to access Help, either by pressing F1 or clicking on the
question mark icon, I get the message: "There is a problem with one or more
installed help files. Please repair your Office installation and try again."
This happened before I downloaded the updates, and it is still occurring
after the downloads (which included help file updates for Excel, Access,
Word, Powerpoint, etc).

After the downloads, I ran the repair option from the installation CD-ROM,
but it didn't cure the problem.

Grateful for any advice!

Did you uninstall 2002 first, before installing 2007?

No, I rashly assumed that the Office 2007 installation “upgrade†process
would do that. In fact, it removed the main programs (Access, Excel, Word and
PowerPoint), but left behind large chunks of other Office 2002 programs.

So I removed these with Add and Remove Programs, and then tried to uninstall
and reinstall Office 2007.

Disaster! The uninstall process failed to complete, with an error message
about a missing DLL file. Same thing happened when I tried “repair†instead.
And the programs had become corrupted, and wouldn't load!

Thoroughly PO’d at this point, I decided to reinstall Office 2002. Yet
another failure. Whilst tracking down on-line help for Office 2002, I came
across the 2 Knowledge Base articles on manually uninstalling Office 2007.
The automated FixIt actually worked, despite an error message to the
contrary.

So I’ve managed to reinstall Office 2007, in a 2002-free environment as best
as I can tell, and I now just have to download the 400MB of updates again.

Guess what. I still can’t access Help!
