problem with open XML file on startup following TR installation

D

durandal

after restarting following the B2TR installation, opening MS Word brings up a
dialog box saying "The Office Open XML file Building Blocks.dotx cannot be
opened because there are problems with the contents." There are no details
available for the error. I found that all the templates in Word had
disappeared. No equations, text boxes, cover pages, headers, footers, etc.
all of it is gone!

I uninstalled Office, did a clean install, and the templates were back
again. Installing B2TR produced the same results; no templates. Help please!

Hi Durandal,

If you have Norton Antivirus on your PC then in that program turn off the Office Plug in from the Miscellaneous settings from
Norton.

From your description it's the dropdown galleries that are blank rather than the templates dialog in File(Office Button)=>New?

If you have been using Office 2007 prior to Beta 2 then the templates from earlier versions, often even if updated during Beta 2,
are now in a 'mixed version' state and can't be used.

Office stores a 'clean' copy of Building Blocks.dotx and the user (modified) copy as well.

After shutting down all Office apps, use Start=>Search for
Building Blocks.dotx . You should get at least two being found.
Recycle the one found in your 'username' folder, i.e.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\

For example if you are on Windows XP Home Edition and signed in under 'Owner' then the <user> area from Windows Explorer where
you'd recycle the Building Blocks.dotx file would be

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\

(Renaming the .dotx file doesn't work BTW).

When you then start Word or other Office app again you should get a 'fresh' Building Blocks.dotx. It will have the new content from
Beta2TR, and the dropdown Ribbon galleries should work. You won't, however, have any custom autotext or other entries you may have
stored in the old one.

thank you very much for your help. and yes, i meant the dropdown galleries
from the ribbon. it took me a few times but i was able to figure it out (i
had to reinstall again because i deleted the wrong file before you posted).

note that the building blocks file you are supposed to delete is hidden;
search only found one building blocks file because hidden files are
automatically left out of searches.

thanks again,
durandal
