Problem with Outlook automatically creating "Personal Folders"

I back up my Outlook data by exporting everything in the "Outlook today"
folder as a .pst file to a removable USB drive.

The problem is that when I start the export process Outlook creates a folder
called "Personal Folders" in the Folder List. This wouldn't be a problem
except that every time Outlook starts from then on without the USB stick in
Outlook generates an error message requiring 3 clicks to get rid of (the
message is that the backup.pst file on the USB stick cannot be found).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That's not how you do it. Instead, stop Outlook and simply copy your PST to
the USB stick. All done. No import/export needed and you won't ever see
the message you are seing now.

What version of Outlook? For OL 2002/2003, click File>Data File Maangement
and remove the reference to the USB-hosted PST. For OL 2000, it should show
up under Tools>Services.
