Problem with Remaining work not being processed/removed correctly

Graeme

One common error we have on our programme that I don't know the cause of is
sometimes the remaining work updates don't get processed correctly, I've seen
this on my own tasks where I report 4 8hr days and then zero out the
remaining work for the final day but after the update is accepted the 8hrs
remaining returns.

A similar issue is that tasks that have been zero'd out sometimes come back
when the plan is synchronised for other reasons, most cases it is only 1hr of
effort that comes back on the task. This is only minor but we use an Earned
value methord that only earns value at 100% complete and so this severely
impacts our metrics.

Have any of you seen anything similar - any insights / fixes?

It's difficult to respond to this post as you give us nothing to go on. You
don't tell us where or how you're making your entries, for instance. So, if
you want a response, please give us some more information. Otherwise, your
complaint has been noted.

Gary - I'm not sure what more you need but I will elaborate if it helps.

We are using 2003 and are on the latest SP (2 for MSP and 2A for the
server). We have managed periods on and therefore resources are entering
their time via PWA and setting remaining work to zero there too but often the
actuals that are entered appear in the plan but the left over work that was
set to zero does not get removed, they have to submit another update with
zero remaining work.

The second issue is that using either the left hand task pane or the task or
resource usage views to remove the remaining work from the tail of the task
from the work field doesn't consistently work. Tasks that were 100% can end
up back at 99 or less as remaining work can reappear. This should not be a
plan sync issue as the actuals are not effected. Evening switching off
managed time periods, removing the remaining work from the plan and
republishing with the overwrite actuals option does not appear to be
reliable. A few plan update cycles later and the remaing work returns even
though the resource has not updated those tasks.

Graeme

Well at least now I know what version you're using.. There have been a
number of post SP2a hotfixes, so I'd definitely want to install the latest
one. I haven't seen either of these scenarios appear on our client sites, so
I'm wondering what might be unique about your setup or usage that might
cause this.
